Tunisia-Libya border crossing closed due to clashes – 2024-03-21 07:12:43

A major border crossing at Ras Zadir, on the border between Tunisia and Libya, has been closed due to armed clashes. Tunisian state TV and Libyan authorities reported this information on Tuesday (March 19). British news agency Reuters reported this news.

In a statement on Tuesday, Libya’s interior ministry said “outsiders” had attacked the border. Libyans often travel to Tunisia for medical treatment and goods trucks travel through that border.

Without elaborating further, the ministry said, ‘Such actions by these illegal groups will not be tolerated. Legal action will be taken against those involved and strict punishment will be imposed.’

There has been some relief in Libya since the 2011 uprising. The country is divided into eastern and western divisions. Each of its regions is ruled by rival administrations.

Footage circulating on social media showed a burning vehicle and people running to the sound of gunfire in Ras Zadir. However, Reuters could not verify that footage.

The ministry announced the deployment of security forces at the border on Sunday to combat smuggling and insecurity.

Tunisia’s Tataouine radio reported late on Monday that the country has closed border crossings to ensure the safety of Tunisian citizens heading to Libya.
