The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior canceled a meeting that was scheduled for Wednesday between members of the Libyan House of Representatives and the Supreme Council to discuss how to change the outgoing national unity government in Tripoli.
According to Tunisian and Libyan sources who spoke, the reason for the cancellation was their failure to obtain a license.
Members of the House of Representatives and others from the Supreme Council of State were to hold a meeting today, Wednesday and Thursday, to discuss how to change the outgoing national unity government in Tripoli.
An official Tunisian source pointed out that the Ministry of Interior was the party that canceled the meeting and informed those concerned about the decision after they did not obtain an official license.
While a source from the Supreme Council of State said in press statements: “Things were going well as the final statement of the meeting was prepared, but we were surprised by the decision of the Tunisian authorities, who seem to want to distance themselves from the current dispute over the government in Libya.”
He added, “It is assumed that a new date will be set for the meeting later to discuss the formation of a new government.”
In previous statements, a member of the Supreme Council of State and head of the Misrata Representatives Assembly, Belkacem Qazit, said: “The meeting will be held under the auspices of a group of representatives from the Supreme Council of State and Parliament, and the presidency of the two councils is aware of it.”
He added: “We sent invitations to the UN mission and an important number of countries to participate in the meeting.”
Libya failed to organize presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24, 2021, and since then the political process has been stalled, while the country is witnessing a governmental division, with a government competing in the east, headed by Osama Hammad, and another in the west, headed by Abdel Hamid Al-Dabaiba. Which pushes hopes for a political breakthrough to gradually disappear.
The UN envoy had recently deemed the two governments illegitimate, but without presenting an initiative to form a unified government.
