President Donald Trump said he plans to send on Friday letters to the business partners of the United States informing them about the imposition of punitive tariffs, while negotiations on the subject enter the final stretch. “I am inclined to send them a letter indicating which tariff they are going to pay,” he told journalists on Thursday. “It’s much easier.”
“We will send some letters, probably from tomorrow,” he added. Trump made these comments days before the entry into force, scheduled for July 9, of punitive and differentiated tariffs for dozens of countries, from Taiwan to the European Union.
In early April, Trump shook global trade by announcing his so -called “reciprocal” tariffs to the rest of the world: a universal minimum surcharge of 10%, which rises to 50% for countries that export more to the United States than they matter in American products.
Before the stupor and panic in the financial markets, the Republican president suspended his highest customs rates for 90 days, to give rise to commercial negotiations with each of those involved.
American officials indicated that a series of trade agreements could be announced in the next few days. Until now, the Trump administration has only revealed agreements with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, while Washington and Beijing agreed to temporarily reduce the high tariffs that were imposed on each other.
