Tropical Storm Chris is about to form, while Beryl moves away from Mexico

The second tropical storm of 2024 formed last night, according to the National Water Commission.

Last night, in the Atlantic Ocean, tropical depression two intensified into a tropical storm named Beryl. It is located approximately 1,785 kilometers (km) east-southeast of Barbados, and 4,805 km east-southeast of the coast of Quintana Roo. It has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h, gusts of 85 km/h and is moving west at 30 km/h.

Conagua reaffirmed that it does not represent a risk for Mexico.

Meteorologists predict that the system will strengthen as it moves through open waters and become a hurricane in a couple of days.

There are currently no coastal emergency advisories in effect.

Two tropical storms, Alberto and Beryl, have formed so far during the Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1.

New potential cyclone will generate rain

However, a new one is already forming low pressure area with cyclonic potential forecast to become Tropical Cyclone Chriswhich will generate rain mainly in the south of the country.

Due to a low pressure zone with cyclonic potential located over the Campeche Sound, extreme weather conditions are forecast in several regions of southeastern Mexico. This situation could develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours and move west-northwest towards the coast of Veracruz.

Rain Forecast

Torrential rains (150 to 250 mm) are expected in the states of:

  • Campeche
  • Chiapas
  • Quintana Roo
  • Yucatan
  • Heavy rains (75 to 150 mm) in:

  • Oaxaca
  • Tabasco
  • Veracruz
  • At 06:00 hours Central Mexico time, the low pressure zone was located on land over Calakmul, Campeche, with a 40% probability of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours.
