Before the introduction of the pedigree in 1999, motorists could prove their vehicle ownership with a sales contract. If there was a contract, the ownership was also clear. However, with the development of technology and the financial world, this concept became obsolete, since only those who did not want to could create a fake transaction. And this led to a series of abuses, for which a solution had to be found: this became the pedigree.

The added value of the pedigree is that it not only proves the ownership, but it is quasi without it prohibition of alienation and encumbrance the car is under, that is, you cannot sell it or charge it without the small green plastic card. This is also why, in the case of a financed car, the registry remains with the financing company until the owner has paid off the debt.

The pedigree therefore knows so much more compared to the sale and purchase that it is much more difficult to forge. Only the Ministry of the Interior is authorized to issue it, and there they do not operate with a potato print, the green plastic has many – inimitable – security elements.

As drivers, we can meet it three times in total: when buying, after rewriting and when selling. That’s why it’s easy to forget about it, it’s not part of everyday driving, and keeping it in the car is not only unnecessary, but also frivolous.

The legislator took into account this eventuality as well, thus recording a couple of exceptions in the legislation, when the car can be sold or rewritten even without a registration.

There is no need to be alarmed by this, it is part of the normal course of business.

• In the case of a car purchased from a dealer we don’t even get such a card with the car in the first place. Because dealers don’t need to request a new registry for every car, it would be unnecessary for the few days or weeks that they have it for resale purposes. In this case, the pedigree will be passivated, the document office will enter this in the car’s registration, and new plastic will have to be requested by the new owner after the dealer during the transfer.
• Sale and purchase between individuals and in this case, it happens that the seller only faces the lack of the pedigree on the day of the sale, which he left behind or did not receive after the purchase, and although the document office kept it for a year, no one went to collect it. Let’s say it was lost or forgotten.

The good news is that the car can be sold/transferred even without a registry.

Well, how? The urban legend holds that it is enough to induce him to buy and sell: the pedigree is lost and we are done. Of course, this is not the case, but the state registry takes the matter more seriously.

• The convenient but lengthy solution is to replace the lost document, when the owner asks for a new one at the document office, pays the HUF six thousand and waits patiently for the postman. The only problem with this is that it is a matter of a week or two, but when there is a buyer who would pay the price, it is not lucky at all.
• The other solution is more fiddly and assumes a relationship of trust between seller and buyer, but it is faster in return. The loss of the pedigree must be reported to the seller in the steering window, where the event is recorded. In this case, the seller waives the re-production of the card, and does not have to provide the customer’s data. However, this is not enough, the car will not be able to be rewritten yet.

The authority officially starts searching for the pedigree. In practice, this means that a On the website of the Ministry of the Interior the ID of the document will be displayed, which will be searched for 14 days. According to legend, if the search is already officially underway, it is sufficient for the pedigree number to be “lost, reported” adding a comment, you don’t have to wait 14 days either. However, the prerequisite for this is that the serial number of the lost document is actually listed on the BM page, which is sometimes delayed. And without it, we will also bounce back from the steering wheel window.

It’s all about having it.

An important criterion is that it is not enough to indicate the loss on the sale. At the time of transfer, the buyer must present the documents that prove that the previous owner reported the loss of the card and did not request its reproduction.

This will not be a process without maceration either.

In the worst case, you should count on one or two days, but sometimes the car is transferred immediately if the paper and all the necessary documents are there. This is a huge improvement – let’s praise the legislator – compared to the practice of previous years, when the serial numbers of lost pedigrees were listed in the Magyar Közlöny, waiting for someone to read them and have the abandoned copy, come forward and return it to the owner. – haha.

However, trust is essential for the entire procedure, and you can most assuredly guarantee success if you went to the document office together with the seller and paid only if there are no obstacles to the transcription. And it is best if you have the pedigree, because the owner has already arranged for its replacement.
