Totalcar – Magazine – This is what happens when a II. WWII Messerschmitt fighter

Short:

  • A rare sight follows: a Messerschmitt Bf 109 is launched.
  • After cornering, it starts so smoothly that even a car that is several years old would be envious.
  • The mighty Daimler-Benz V12 comes to life with a distinctive sound and sounds amazing.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the feared fighter plane of the German Luftwaffe in World War II. The development of the then modern fighters began in 1934, and they were put into service in 1936. A lot of Bf 109s were produced: together with the converted examples, more than 37,000 units were produced.

The plane was lifted into the air by the Daimler-Benz DB 605, inverted – also known as hanging – V12. The 33.9-liter basic version produced roughly 1,500 horsepower. The DB 605 was produced with various displacements, and there was also a supercharged version.

Fortunately, in their current state, these airplanes are not a formidable weapon, but rather a technical curiosity. Since these are machines that were actively used in the war, for obvious reasons there are hardly any working examples left today.

Some pieces have been preserved for posterity, and among them there are also some that not only collect dust at exhibitions, but are sometimes started and sometimes even flown with them. Recently, YouTube uploaded a video made in the nineties, in which we can see how a restored 109 is started.

The man on the wing persistently cranks the huge V12, the exhausts of which are terrifyingly close to his feet. At first I was a little afraid that he would burn the hair on his legs, but he tactically jumped off the wing before takeoff. The Messerschmitt comes to life accompanied by a distinctive, metallic sound, and then the old DB 605 rumbles like nothing else today.
