Electronic commerce has had a continuous increase in the level of transactions, from 1.7% of the total operations carried out with credit and debit cards at Point of Sale Terminals (POS) that were carried out in 2015, to last year representing the 23%, that is, 1,062 million operations carried out through the Internet.
According to the information provided by the Bank of Mexico, the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef), reports that During 2023, around 4,626 million operations were carried out with credit and debit cardsof which electronic commerce represented 23%, that is, 1,062 million, amounting to 802,747 million pesos.
This has been favored by the growing use of technology to make it easier for purchases to be made digitally, for example, when paying with a credit or debit card using “contactless” (bringing the plastic closer to the Point of Sale Terminal). ), or in the case of the purchase of a good or service on the merchant’s website where the card data is already stored due to a recurring purchase being made with that merchant or in the case of digital cards where you no longer physically need the plastic because its data is already saved on a mobile device.
Another important factor is the increase in security measures implemented by issuers, which allow these types of operations to be carried out with greater confidence, such as the dissemination of information about electronic fraud, how to identify them so as not to be a victim of onethe activation of alerts via SMS message every time a purchase is made, the use of a dynamic digital CVV which is different for each purchase and can only be used for a limited time.
Another incentive for the growth of electronic commerce is that it can reduce transaction costs for businesses by not needing the physical infrastructure to publicize and sell the variety of goods and/or services they have.
The preference for using the debit card remained, since, of the 1,062 million operations, this card represented 69.6% (739 million operations) for an amount of 385 thousand 442 million pesos; while With the credit card the number of operations was 323 million with an amount of 417 thousand 305 million pesos. For every credit card operation, 2.3 are carried out with a debit card; However, when considering the expense, there is a slightly higher proportion for the credit card, since credit purchases usually tend to be larger.
The average expense made in each e-commerce purchase for the credit card was 1,292 pesos and for the debit card it was 522 pesos, which still indicates that for small purchases the use is preferably with own resources and for larger purchases How much credit granted by financial entities is used.
In this sense, compared to the same period in 2022, electronic commerce operations presented an increase of 27.5%, however, with respect to their amount, this increased by 31.7%. The debit card increased the most in terms of the amount, 35.46%, and the number of operations, 31.69%.
During 2023, cardholders requested authorization for around 1,583 million e-commerce purchases, using both payment methods; 67% ended in an authorized movement by the card issuing institutionThat is, 1,062 million operations of which only 0.46% resulted in a chargeback or claim by the cardholder by not recognizing the operation or its amount.
In terms of participation in operations, the cards issued by BBVA were the predominant ones, making 45.7% of online purchases with them, followed by those from Banamex with 16.7%. These two institutions account for 62.4% of the transactions. e-commerce carried out in 2023:
The authorization percentage in 2023 was 70% for the credit card while in debit it was 67%.
Banamex is the institution with the highest percentage, since, in both cards, credit and debit, this institution authorizes 8 out of every 10 purchase requests.
