Research findings have shown that increasing the consumption of legumes, including soy, and nuts has a significant effect in preventing breast cancer recurrence.
The research team, led by scientists from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in the US, conducted 22 major studies focusing on soybeans, lignans (a type of polyphenol found in various plants such as seeds and nuts), cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli and green tea analyzed.
The research team also examined the effects of phytonutrients (bioactive substances found in plants) present in these foods.
Research findings have shown that consuming large amounts of isoflavones, a phytochemical abundant in soy and other legumes, reduces the risk of breast cancer recurrence by 26%. The effect was greatest when taken at a dose of 60 mg per day, which is equivalent to 2 cups of soy milk, 3 ounces (85 g) of tofu and half a cup of cooked beans.
Isoflavones have been found to reduce breast cancer death by 12%. This effect was greatest when consuming 1 or 2 servings of soy foods per day. Isoflavones, present not only in legumes but also in dried fruit, have a similar function to the female hormone estrogen and are called phytoestrogens.
The American Cancer Society advises women who worry it may be unsafe to eat beans after a breast cancer diagnosis because the isoflavones in legumes can act like estrogen in the body: “Though it’s best to be sure. Although it takes a lot research, some Studies suggest that consuming soy foods may reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence. “Although eating soy foods does not appear to pose any risk, the evidence is not yet clear on the effects of consumption of legumes or isoflavone supplements, which often contain significantly greater amounts of isoflavones.”
The research team also analyzed lignans present in different plants, such as seeds, nuts, legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Flaxseeds, cashews, broccoli and Brussels sprouts contain particularly high concentrations of lignans.
High levels of enterolactone, which is formed when lignans are broken down in the digestive system, were associated with a 28 percent lower risk of death from breast cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of premature death from all causes.
The research team said: “Lignans and legumes were so effective that breast cancer survivors were recommended for use in all dietary guidelines” and “However, other foods and nutrients showed suggestive results, even if we don’t have enough data.”
For example, the research team found that drinking a lot of green tea was associated with a 44% reduction in the rate of breast cancer recurrence in women treated for stage 1 or 2 breast cancer.
“These studies were conducted among women who had undergone medical or surgical treatment for breast cancer, and these foods and phytonutrients should not be considered alternatives to treatment,” said Channing Parler, MD, professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins University and member of the research team, he stressed.
The results of this study (Phytonutrients and Outcomes after Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies) were published in the National Cancer Institute’s journal JNCI Cancer Spectrum.
