But they had no doubt the injury was serious enough to end the fight. The Irishman’s Australia-based manager, Mike Altamura, was disappointed with the outcome but sympathised with his fighter. “Basically, two punches at the end of the sixth round, two left hooks, and Inoue hit him in the small of his back on the right side; when he got back to the corner, he was really cooked,” said Mike Altamura.
”It could barely sit on the bench. Hector [Bermudez, pelatihnya] chatted with him, gauged his condition, gave him a chance to continue, but it became clear in the seventh round that he was not in a good condition to continue. However, [itu adalah] a very brave effort,” Mike continued.
“It was a back spasm from getting hit in the wrong place a couple of times, because he actually took another one in the seventh round, obviously. A little bit of rest and recovery – a couple of days – he’ll be fine. Nothing structurally wrong – just spasms.”
Altamura also gave credit to Doheny’s coach, Bermudez, for a game plan that allowed Doheny to enjoy his moments before the stoppage. ”Hector Bermudez [adalah] “A coach who is never underestimated and one of the best in the game,” Altamura said. ”I want to say about that game, I’m very proud of TJ’s effort. I think it’s sad; it hurts us.”
”We’ve had four wins and one loss in Japan now, but I think with the spirit and the courage he showed in that fight, we’ll be back here soon. A lot of people didn’t give him much of a chance, but he came forward, he pot-shotted and outplayed ‘The Monster’ in the third and fourth rounds, and Inoue had to make some tactical changes. We’re very proud of TJ, but we also give credit to Naoya Inoue, of course.”
Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Bermudez confirmed that the damage was done in the sixth round.
”I know Inoue did a little bit of attacking [pada awal ronde ketujuh]but that’s not what hurt him – he was already hurt in the previous round,” said the trainer.
”TJ is fine now; he’s seen the doctor; he’s still a little shaken up; he had an injury in the previous round; it looks like a sciatic nerve. He tried his best to get up in the seventh; but it was very painful for him.”
