According to the forecast of March 1 by the Meteorological Department of Balochistan, heavy rains may cause flash floods in the canals of Gwadar, Kech, Turbat, Panjgur, Awaran, Barkhan, Kohlu, Sabi, Nasirabad, Dalbandin and Khuzdar. The agency has requested all concerned authorities and departments to remain vigilant during the forecast period.

Karachi, Sindh

The meteorological department has predicted intermittent heavy rain in Karachi today from noon to night, while an emergency has also been imposed across Sindh in view of the possible bad weather.

The education department has decided to have a holiday in private and public schools in Karachi today, while work will be half-day in public and private institutions.

All local bodies, administrations and hospitals have been put on high alert while staff holidays have been cancelled.

According to Correspondent Amar Garu in Karachi, Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah directed all local bodies, hospitals, Water Board, Karachi Electric (KE) and Cantonment Boards to be ready to deal with any emergency. They have also appealed not to leave their homes unnecessarily.

He directed Hyderabad Commissioner Khalid Haider Shah to make necessary arrangements for the protection of pilgrims and directed HESCO to provide uninterrupted power supply to Sahyun during Urs.

Gwadar

Regarding the coastal city of Gwadar, which has been declared a disaster, the PDMA Balochistan department has indicated in its report that four connecting roads, one bridge and more than 140 houses have been affected by rain and floods.

According to the PDMA report regarding the recent rains in Gwadar and Kech, more than 15 four walls have collapsed, four roads and one bridge have been destroyed, more than 50 houses have been completely destroyed while 90 have been partially damaged.

The authorities have postponed the matriculation examinations in Gwadar while schools in other districts of the province have also issued a declaration to remain closed for another week.

PDMA Balochistan Director General Jahanzeb Khan has said that rains are continuing in 22 districts of Balochistan including Quetta Valley and Gwadar. In addition to damage to private and government properties in different areas due to rains, three members of the same family have lost their lives and one person has also been injured in the incidents of roof and wall collapse of houses.

He told Independent Urdu that at present there is a flood situation in Gwadar, Kharan Kalat and Dalbandin and 22 districts are getting heavy rain and some less rain. All concerned departments have been directed to be alert.

Caretaker Chief Minister of Balochistan Mir Ali Mardan Khan Domki has said that an extraordinary disaster situation has arisen in Godar due to continuous rains. He said that the communication system was badly affected while the low-lying areas were flooded.

Rescue operations have been started in Gwadar with the help of Pakistan Army and emergency measures are being taken to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

Senator of Gwadar, Kehda Babar, has expressed concern over the slow relief operations of the government and administration and said that ‘the treatment of the people of Gwadar should be stopped.’ He demanded that NDMA and PDMA should speed up operations in Gwadar and provide heavy duty generators to draw water from the affected wards.

According to BNA, reports were received that many people’s property and livestock were at risk of death after heavy rains and snowfall in five provinces of the country (Balkh, Jawzjan, Faryab, Herat and Badghis).

In this regard, an emergency meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mulla Muhammad Hassan Akhund, in which officials and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Borders and Tribes participated. After reviewing the situation, an urgent committee was formed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

It was also decided in the meeting that a committee will be formed under the chairmanship of the governors of these provinces, which will have representatives of army corps, police commanders, public affairs, public health and other service institutions and as soon as possible it will be in these provinces. Will utilize all our resources.

These committees will take measures to protect people from cold and deliver food and fuel to their homes. The committee will give immediate attention to the serious measures to open the roads and other demands of the public in this regard.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Mullah Muhammad Hasan Akhund also requested the common people to help the farmers of their nearby areas to prevent further loss of people and livestock.
