Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man who shot Donald Trump

MADRID (EUROPA PRESS) – The man responsible for the attack on former US President Donald Trump, Thomas Matthew Crooks, shot the Republican candidate for the White House with a weapon legally acquired by his father, multiple security sources confirmed to ABC News.

Crooks’ father’s name is listed as the buyer of the firearm — a semi-automatic assault rifle, according to security sources speaking to NBC — according to the results of a trace conducted by the federal agency for the control of firearms in the U.S., the ATF.

Law enforcement has not yet released any further details about Crooks, but his Bethel Park high school confirmed the 20-year-old was one of its students and is expected to graduate in 2022.

By Saturday afternoon, police had identified the shooter as Mark Violets, but it was later revealed that he was Matthew Crooks.

The FBI has identified the 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the main person involved in this “attempted assassination” of former President Donald Trump. “The investigation remains active,” the security agency said.

“An audience member and the shooter are dead following a shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania,” Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said Saturday.

The same sources have indicated that the person who shot Trump was presumably on the roof of a building located outside the venue where the event was being held; at a distance of about 120 or 150 meters from the politician, according to a position analysis prepared by CNN based on the reports received.

However, many details remain unknown regarding the incident. In this regard, House Speaker Mike Johnson promised to conduct a “full investigation into the tragic events.”

“The American people deserve to know the truth. We will have Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other appropriate officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI appear before our committees as soon as possible,” he said.
