The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD crippled the Roman city of Pompeii with a shower of volcanic ash and pumice, then blanketed the city in a torrent of hot gas and volcanic material.
As reported by IFL Science, ,while the fiery fury of a volcano appears to be the primary killer, new evidence suggests another deadly force may have played a role: a massive earthquake.
In his eyewitness account of the destruction of Pompeii, Pliny the Younger wrote that the eruption was accompanied by a “trembling of the earth.” His letter explained, “The night was so terrible that it not only shook but, it seemed, turned everything about us upside down.”
To date, there is no hard evidence to support his historical account of earthquakes. However, recent excavations at the Insula dei Casti Amanti in the heart of Pompeii’s ruins have revealed that a simultaneous earthquake also played a significant role in the city’s destruction.
A team of archaeologists and volcanologists found that many victims died not from inhaling ash or extreme heat, but from being buried under collapsed buildings.
“We found strange characteristics that are inconsistent with the volcanic impact phenomena described in the volcanological literature devoted to Pompeii. There must be a different explanation,” Dr. Mauro Di Vito, co-author of the study and a volcanologist and director of the INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano, said in a statement.
These findings suggest that a massive earthquake, combined with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, was a deadly combination that led to the destruction of Pompeii and the loss of so many lives. Further research at Pompeii will likely reveal more about this catastrophic event and how earthquakes and volcanic eruptions worked together to wreak havoc on the doomed city.
These findings provide new insights into the catastrophic event that destroyed Pompeii and provide important insights into the combined hazards of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
