This is Wi-Fi 7. The new standard will enter the market this year

Changes to numbers on later smartphones or computers usually mean one thing. It’s all about technological development, faster operation and better components. It is no different in the case of the wireless network we use at home. Wi-Fi numbering also refers to generation and therefore tells us what a particular router uses and what it is capable of. If Wi-Fi 5 or 6 isn’t enough for you anymore, we have great news. Wi-Fi 7 is already on the horizon.

Is there anything to look forward to? Certainly yes, especially since the new standard will appear on the market later this year. New routers that support the seventh generation of wireless Internet will be available for sale in the coming months. Above all, they will guarantee us a notable technological leap, offering truly fast Internet. What will be the features of the new and better home Internet?

As reported by Kevin Robinson of the Wi-Fi Alliance, the new Wi-Fi standard will be based on multi-link operations. In short, it means the ability to use additional bandwidth. Is the difference notable compared to previous standards? Absolutely yes, just compare it to Wi-Fi 6.

Until now, Wi-Fi 6 used two bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Wi-Fi 7 will be able to use three bands simultaneously: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and an additional 6 GHz. First , this means the ability to support multiple devices while maintaining network stability. So far, a common problem with Wi-Fi has been channel clogging, while the “seven” should be much more efficient in managing multiple devices.

But this is not the end, because Internet bandwidth will also change. We will again use the comparison with the sixth generation of this technology. Wi-Fi 6 can reach a transmission speed of up to 9.6 Gb/s, which is a good result. But let’s imagine that Wi-Fi 7 will guarantee us up to 30 Gb/s. This is a huge positive change, essentially threefold.

The concept of “multi-link” appeared above, i.e. the simultaneous use of all channels via Wi-Fi 7. It is worth dwelling on this for a moment, because we are talking about the biggest innovation related to this standard. As we read in the announcements, this versatility will be the key to the success of the new standard.

It’s easy to imagine the difference between using one channel and three at the same time. It’s not just about better speed, but also about greater resistance to interference, interruptions or drops in connection quality. Who needs it? Yes, all of us. We use more and more devices, watch videos in 4K, probably the 8K standard will be introduced soon – a truly powerful Internet will come in handy.

Is it worth replacing your Wi-Fi router with a new one? Definitely yes, although it should be remembered that the new standard provides for such devices on both sides. This means that our phone or TV will also have to be equipped with Wi-Fi 7 in order to exploit the router’s full potential.
