TEL AVIV – Former Prime Minister (PM) Israel Ehud Barak described his country’s “absolute victory” in the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip as an empty slogan.

He again denounced PM Benjamin Netanyahu as a failed leader who brought the Jewish state to the brink of destruction.

“Israel is on the cusp of a growing crisis that is far from over. This is the most serious and dangerous crisis in the country’s history. It began on October 7 with the worst failure in Israel’s history,” Barak wrote in an article published by the newspaper HaaretzSaturday (15/6/2024).

“The current crisis was followed by a war that, despite the courage and sacrifice of soldiers and officers, appears to be the most unsuccessful war in its history, due to the paralysis of the strategic leadership in the country,” he said.

“We now face difficult decisions between the ugly alternatives of continuing fighting in the Gaza Strip, expanding operations against Hezbollah in the north and risking a multifront war involving Iran and its proxies. And all this is happening while the judicial coup continues, with the aim of establishing a racist, ultranationalist, messianic and vile religious dictatorship,” he explained.

Barak continued, “This crisis requires us to mobilize everything that is strong, good and effective in us to return to the path of growth, empowerment, enlightenment and hope that Israel has been on throughout its history. That would be a real win.”

“At this moment, we cannot afford to make any more mistakes. We need to look directly and bravely at what is happening to us and why, and then we need to resolve to fix it quickly, despite the opposition that will arise if such action is taken. “This requires firmness, courage and action—from members of the opposition, from members of the governing coalition who have power, and also from us, all citizens,” added Barak.

“This is a real emergency! “The essence of the disaster we are experiencing is that in the midst of this disaster, Israel is led by a government and a prime minister who is clearly unfit to serve,” he continued.

“The people responsible for what happened on October 7 and responsible for the failure of the war in Gaza are not suited to lead Israel into a new era where the risks will be much greater.”
