Hand sanitizers have been found to damage brain cells.

The study, which examined 1,823 compounds of unknown toxicity, identified two classes of chemicals that kill or inhibit the growth of cells in the laboratory. Support cells surround neurons and form an insulating covering that allows brain signals to travel quickly.
One of the chemical classes identified in the study, published in the academic journal Nature Neuroscience, is quaternary compounds. These compounds in hand sanitizers are also used to kill bacteria and viruses in personal care products like toothpaste and mouthwash. Even if used incorrectly, harmful events can occur.
Studies investigating the effects of hand sanitizers on human health have begun to increase in recent years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people have twice as many quadruple compounds in their blood as before the pandemic, which is thought to be due to the widespread use of disinfectants.
