According to the research of scientists from the University of Munich, aspirin can be effective in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

Publika.az reports that the results of the research were published in “Nature” magazine.

Researchers have found that aspirin induces the production of molecules (miR-34a and miR-34b/c) that destroy cancer cells. For this, aspirin stimulates the activity of the enzyme AMPK, which, in turn, changes the transcription factor NRF2. The NRF transcription factor is involved in the antioxidant defense of cells and tissues in the body against various toxins, oxidative stress and carcinogenic substances.

The AMPK enzyme alters NRF2 transcription so that it enters the cell nucleus, activating the expression of the miR-34 gene, which binds to the miR-34a and miR-34b/c molecules. These molecules belong to the family of tumor suppressors. In other words, they prevent the transformation of healthy cells into cancerous cells, thereby having both a preventive and curative effect in the case of intestinal cancer.

The scientists emphasize that further studies are needed to thoroughly study the effect of aspirin on the activity of cancer cells. The authors hope that in the future it will be possible to develop new drugs based on aspirin for the treatment of oncological diseases.
