Although men are more likely to develop fatty liver disease, women with the disease have a higher risk of death.
Publika.az reports, this is the research published in the “Journal of Hepatology” magazine.
The cause of fatty liver can be alcohol abuse or metabolic disorders: excess visceral obesity, diabetes, hypertension – all these disorders not only cause fatty liver, but also worsen when they occur.
Scientists analyzed the data of ten thousand patients who underwent liver ultrasound and other medical examinations. About 20% developed fatty liver disease, with men affected twice as often as women. However, over a 27-year follow-up, mortality was twice as high in women. When fatty liver disease was caused by alcohol abuse, women had a 160% higher risk of death than men. Even when alcohol was not involved, the risk was 83% higher.
The results mean that women may be more susceptible to severe fatty liver disease, especially if they drink heavily.
