Courtois admits he reacted a little too emotionally when it became clear he was not allowed to wear the captain’s armband against Austria. “Maybe I made a choice a little too quickly. But I’m just a human being with feelings, I’m not a robot.”
“Many now think that I didn’t want to play that match against Estonia anyway, but that’s not true. I had already organized everything to be able to return to Madrid from there.”
In any case he won’t be at the European Championships. Not so much because of the argument with the national team coach, but because of his injury. “Even if I had to keep a match with Real Madrid at the end of the season, that doesn’t mean I would be 100% ready for a European Championship.”
“But I will still watch the Belgians’ games. I did it even when I was injured. I hope they get as far as possible. 2018 was our best chance to win the title so far, maybe we can still get closer now?”
2023 ended badly for Thibaut Courtois due to his injury, but 2024 has already started with a boost: a trophy! “This will definitely be in my trophy case among all my other trophies.”
