Health Minister Fernando Ruiz announced that on February 4, President Duque will finalize the project that will seek to create the first vaccine production plant in Colombia, which will be located in Rionegro (Antioquia).

During a meeting with representatives of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the IDB, as well as health authorities from Prosur member countries, the official said that much of the Latin American region has limitations in this regard.

In light of this situation, “there are already responses such as those we have proposed in Colombia, so that in a regional context they can be achieved, with long-term sustainable results and allowing public and private initiatives to have the capacity to solve and generate possibilities.”

Fernando Ruiz also reiterated the importance of building a regional health security strategy, therefore, “Colombia can tell the region that it has concrete projects with funding to be able to advance in the production of vaccines.”

Minister Ruiz also referred to the studies currently being carried out among Prosur member countries for regional integration in the area of ​​vaccine production, highlighting some of the objectives of the analyses.

“Consolidating the capacity of local or regional vaccine production on the continent and in the region is a strategic and fundamental issue for maintaining the social and economic activity of our countries and for responding equitably to emerging diseases,” he said.

Finally, Minister Ruiz considered that with the member countries of Prosur “we are seeking to carry out a diagnostic study to have clarity in the analysis of the capacities and conditions and feasibility of production (of vaccines) existing in the countries.”
