The facilities of Virgin of the Assumption Safe Homelocated in the municipality of San José Pinula, Guatemala, where seven years ago a fire which left 41 girls and adolescents dead, will be used to set up a center run by the Social Welfare Secretariat of the Presidency (SBS).
Specifically, it is the Specialized Center for Reintegration, in which a series of practices focused on the comprehensive care of minors in conflict with criminal law will be implemented.
Carlos Menchú, Undersecretary of Reintegration, said that the adolescents who will be transferred to that site are those who are currently in the “Las Gaviotas” youth provisional detention center, in zone 13 of Guatemala City.

About the center
According to the interviewee, the facility will have three levels of security, these being: maximum, intermediate and minimum.
“The center is planned to be ready for use in September and in November the first transfers will begin and this process will be progressive,” explained the official.
He added that the adolescents who are admitted to the CER will be encouraged to produce their own food and generate supplies to sell, for which they already have contacts with companies and members of civil society.
In addition, a complete bakery and a restaurant are equipped to incorporate young people into the world of work.
The SBS is in charge of caring for the minor population whose rights have been violated, in addition to monitoring the situation of adolescents in conflict with criminal law.
