When anxiety is constant, it can evolve into a disorder and require specialized psychiatric treatment, warned specialists from the “Manuel Velasco Suárez” National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INNNMVS) of the Ministry of Health.
By explaining that anxiety is a common response of the body to situations of worry, fear or pressure; They added that, if it becomes a disorder, patients may experience tachycardia, dizziness, numbness of hands, sweating, changes in body temperature and sleeping problems.
The Ministry of Health reported in a statement that the most common types of anxiety are generalized, which is caused by multiple concerns; the social, for fear of being negatively evaluated by society, and for separation.
Likewise, they pointed out that some gastrointestinal problems may be associated with anxiety, because the gastric system contains neurons that produce serotonin and when altered, symptoms such as inflammation and constipation, among others, occur, which decrease as the disorder is controlled with medications.
Therefore, they reiterated that anxiety disorder is due to an alteration of the neurotransmitters responsible for modulating emotions and the response to stress, which is why it develops due to frequent exposure to excessive worry or fear.
When the disorder begins, the specialists described, the symptoms are mild or moderate, but they can evolve to be severe; This results in a decreased quality of life, the development of other mental health disorders, an increased risk of psychoactive substance use, self-harm and suicidal thoughts, and can even be disabling.
They clarified that in addition to pharmacological treatment and psychological care, it is possible to control an anxiety crisis through breathing exercises, muscle tension and distension, or physical activity.
That said, they pointed out that the false belief that the drugs used as treatment cause dependence is common and that is why people do not seek care from psychiatric specialists.
“Psychiatric medications do not cause addiction, contrary to this, they have a broad safety profile, they are aimed at eliminating symptoms and increasing serotonin levels that allow us to react better to anxiety situations and control emotions,” reported the Health Secretary.
Finally, the institution returned to data published by the National Commission on Mental Health and Addictions (Conasama) in which they mention that in Mexico 19.3 percent of the adult population suffers from severe anxiety symptoms and more than 30 percent present them in a mild form. or moderate.
Therefore, INNNMVS specialists point out that mental health must be taken care of from childhood, through healthy lifestyles, such as restful sleep, healthy eating, hydration, avoiding excessive use of technology and physical and recreational activities.
