TAIPEI.— The 7.4 magnitude earthquake registered in Taiwan left at least nine dead and 1,111 injured.
In addition, dozens of buildings were destroyed by the tremor, according to the latest report from the authorities.
Taiwanese authorities detailed that the movement and its aftershocks were the most intense on this island in 25 years, and warned that more tremors may occur in the coming days.
All the deaths occurred in Hualien county, the closest point to the epicenter of the earthquake in the east of the island, the fire department said.
Three of the fatalities were crushed to death by rocks while hiking.
Three others perished in their vehicles, when they were trapped by landslides.

One more person died in a quarry, according to the first details provided by official sources.
It is unknown how the remaining deaths occurred.
Added to this is that at least 70 miners were trapped inside two coal mines in the city of Hualien, Taiwan, after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred.
In total, 127 people remain trapped.
The city of Hualien is located in a mountainous area, with irregular terrain, making it prone to landslides, local media warned after the earthquake.
Everything was shaking violently. The pictures on the wall, the television and the liquor cabinet fell,” a resident of the city of Hualien told local television SET TV.
In New Taipei City, a warehouse collapsed, but more than 60 people managed to escape alive from the rubble, the regional government reported.
“It was like a mountain collapsed,” said Liu, who lives next to the property.
In September 1999, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake killed about 2,400 people.
After the emergency, the governments of China and the United States offered help to Taiwan to recover from the earthquake that occurred on an island that in the last year has been a recurring cause of political tensions between both powers.
White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson offered her support to the affected regions.
“The United States is ready to provide whatever assistance is necessary,” he said.
The Mexican government spoke out in favor of the victims.
“Mexico sends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquake that occurred in eastern Taiwan and all its solidarity with the affected people, wishing them a very speedy recovery,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed in its X account.
