On the fifth day after the death of Alexei Navalny, investigators showed the body of a politician to his mother, but refused to hand it over and demanded a secret burial, threatening that otherwise they would delay the process of handing over the body as much as possible.
Lyudmila Navalnaya stated this in a video message published on the politician’s channel on YouTube.
“The investigators say they know the cause of death. They have all the medical and legal documents ready, which I saw, I signed the death certificate as well. According to the law, they should have given me Alexei’s body immediately, but they still haven’t. Instead, they gave me they are blackmailing me, setting conditions for where, when and how to bury Alexei,” Navalny’s mother says in the video.
“They want to do it secretly, without saying goodbye. They want to take me to the outskirts of the cemetery, to a fresh grave and say, here lies your son. I do not agree with that. I want you too, to whom Alexei is dear, to for whom his death was a personal tragedy, to have the opportunity to say goodbye to him. I am recording this video because they started threatening me. Looking me in the eye, they say that if I do not agree to a secret burial, they will do something with my son’s body Investigator Voropaev openly told me: time is not on your side, the corpse is decomposing,” she concludes.
At the same time, Navalny’s team reported that his death certificate said he died of natural causes.
The 47-year-old opposition figure died last week in a penal colony in Russia’s Arctic Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Oblast. His family and associates claim he was killed at the behest of the Kremlin, a claim Russian authorities deny.
