India’s Supreme Court has ordered 11 men convicted of the murder and gang rape of a pregnant Muslim woman to return to prison. The criminals enjoyed freedom for only two years. They were released after serving a fourteen-year sentence, which the justice system now considered too lenient a punishment for such brutal acts.
An Indian court has overturned the state government’s decision to release eleven people convicted of raping a 21-year-old woman in 2002. They will have to return to prison and continue to be punished for their actions.
The judges said the Gujarat government’s decision to release life-sentenced rapists in August 2022, after serving 14 years of their sentences, was hasty. He is expected to return to prison within two weeks.
The men committed brutal crimes. They participated in the violence and crimes that occurred when a Hindu mob attacked a Muslim family. She survived the rape, but 14 people close to her died. Her 3-year-old daughter was among the victims. Bilkis Banow, 21, was pregnant at the time of the brutal rape.

According to CNN, Indian judges found that the Gujarat government “did not have the jurisdiction” to issue remission orders. The release of the defendants sentenced to life imprisonment was considered an abuse and a mockery of justice in a country where it is still difficult to enforce women’s rights and guarantee their immunity.
Indian rapists are back behind bars
“With this ruling, the rule of law has been restored. We are fighting for this in a country where a woman is raped every 17 minutes,” Shobha Gupta, Bilkis Bano’s lawyer, said after the ruling was issued.
The crimes committed in Gujarat in 2002 were religiously and racially motivated. They were a Hindu attack on the Muslim community. More than a thousand Muslims died during these riots.
Bano told the court that men ran towards them with swords, sticks and sickles. One of them grabbed her three-year-old daughter and threw her to the ground. They raped and killed the women gathered in the house. The 21-year-old lost consciousness and woke up just hours later surrounded by the corpses of her loved ones.
In 2008, after a high-profile trial, her attackers were sentenced to life in prison for rape and murder. However, in August 2022, the state government granted them release under a provision of the Indian Criminal Procedure Code that allows prisoners to be released after serving 14 years.
The decision sparked outrage across India. People protested in the streets. Critics argued that the decision to release the men was tainted by politics, misogyny and religious discrimination. The case was therefore referred to the highest court of the Indian judiciary.
