A total of 11 thousand kilos of corn seeds, genetically modified without authorization, were destroyed by court order. The grains come from seizures carried out in two raids by prosecutor José Silguero, of the Specialized Unit in Punishable Acts against the Environment, of Santa Rita.
The operation was carried out in a private warehouse at km 16 of Minga Guazú. Technicians from the Paraguayan Association of Plant Breeders (Parpov), the institution that filed the complaint about the illegal commercialization of GMOs, participated, as did its legal representative, lawyer Enrique Guerrero.
Regarding the raids, they were carried out at the time, on two private properties, both in Santa Rita and San Cristóbal, whose owners are being prosecuted.
Genetic manipulation, without authorization, constitutes a punishable act and is provided for in Article 5 of Law 716/96 “Which punishes crimes against the environment,” as explained by the intervening prosecutor.
He pointed out that the National Service for Plant and Seed Quality and Health (Senave) intervened in the procedure to determine that the seeds were indeed modified.
