They denounce the situation of Changuito, founder of Los Van Van: “He doesn’t even have a refrigerator”

Havana Cuba. – The percussionist José Luis Quintana, better known as Changuito, one of the living legends of percussion in Cuba, lives in a state of calamity in his house in Havana.

The director of the Klimax orchestra, Giraldo Piloto, denounced in a live broadcast through his Facebook profile, from Changuito’s house, the situation in which the percussionist finds himself. The musician, who was the founder of the Los Van Van orchestra with Juan Formell, does not have the basic conditions to live at home.

“El Chango, legend of percussion in Cuba. We need to support the man because the conditions in which he is living are not the best. His house is not in good condition, he has to change many things, the roof, the door, there is no refrigerator,” Piloto said.

Changuito, 76 years old, lives in the Guanabacoa municipality. Following Piloto’s complaint, several people are mobilizing to help him, he told CubaNet a popular music producer who requested anonymity. Furthermore, cultural institutions promised to support him now.

The source regretted that the musician had fallen into this state despite the fact that “there were not a few who knew of his situation.” He added that Los Van Van have also been concerned about his situation and “they are going to help him.”

In 2022, Yudianis Quintana Gonzaléz, daughter of the famous percussionist, denounced the lack of support for her father from the Cuban Institute of Music and asked for help due to his delicate state of health.

“Hello, I just want to inform you something: Daddy’s health depends on a call from the Institute. I’m just going to wait for an answer. I need an income for my father. My brother and I have been doing this for two weeks,” Quintana González wrote on his Facebook profile.

Following the complaints, Changuito was admitted to the “Enrique Cabrera Cossío” General Hospital, known as the National Hospital.

“How quickly the income appeared after I wrote the letter, how quickly the income appeared (…), the next day,” he added.
