MEXICO CITY (apro).- Six associations defending LGBT+ rights announced that they had filed a lawsuit on Monday against Marion Maréchal, leader of the French far-right party Reconquista, for “transphobic insult” after he referred to the Spanish actress transgender Karla Sofía Gascón as “man”.
On Saturday, within the framework of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Gascón received the actress award together with Selena Gómez, Adriana Paz and Zoe Saldaña, for the film “Emilia Pérez” – about a lawyer who helps a drug trafficker to retire and transition as a transgender woman–, by director Jacques Audiard.
After the recognition of the Spanish actress, Maréchal spoke on her X account: “Therefore, it is a man who receives the award for… female performance at Cannes. “Progress for the left is the elimination of women and mothers.”
It is therefore a man who receives the prize for… female interpretation at Cannes.

In response to the far-right statement, six associations defending LGBT+ rights, Mousse, Stop Homophobie, Familles LGBT, Adheos, Quazar and Fédération LBGTI+, announced to AFP that they had filed a complaint on Monday, May 27, for “transphobic insult” against the leader:
“We filed a complaint against Marion Maréchal Le Pen for having violated republican laws by promoting hatred and discrimination, in particular during her intervention on @telematin (…) we are determined to go to the end to enforce our laws and obtain justice for people whose respect and dignity are seriously violated,” they declared.
“These illegal behaviors reinforce the climate of violence in which LGBT+ people live in France. Marion Maréchal Le Pen’s speeches are heard by those who act. Since 2016, violence against LGBT+ people has skyrocketed by more than 129%, with the largest increase affecting transgender people. “We are more determined than ever to protect them,” they concluded in the letter.
Etienne Deshoulières, lawyer for the associations, said that “Marion Maréchal’s comments deny the very existence of transgender people, as well as the violence and discrimination of which these people are victims every day,” as reported by “Franceinfo.”
“No legal intimidation will silence me. I will remain on the side of truth, reality and rejecting the erasure of women,” Maréchal responded today, again in X.
