The Salvadoran Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) with the financial support of $1.5 million from the Korean Forest Service, began the restoration of degraded lands in water recharge zones of the Sumpul and Nunuapa sub-basins of the Lempa River, which will benefit more than 1,600 small producers in Chalatenango.

The initiative will increase tree cover, which will reduce the deterioration of natural forest resources, soil and water, especially in degraded areas due to forest fires or poor agricultural practices.

“We seek to protect areas that already have forest, areas with forest cover such as the case of La Montañona, and we also seek to recover soils that are in conflict of use, that is, those that are forestry-oriented, but that are currently used for agricultural activities. and livestock. Part of the gallery forests, protection zones of the Sumpul River and the Nunuapa River will also be recovered,” explained the general director of Forest Planning, Watersheds and Irrigation of the MAG, Elías Escobar.

The importance of implementing forest protection activities is that it benefits both producers and the environment, since it will improve coffee production, as well as the climate in this region of the country. The benefited inhabitants belong to the districts of La Palma, San Ignacio, San Fernando, La Laguna, El Carrizal, Ojos de Agua, Las Vueltas, Nueva Trinidad, San José Las Flores and Arcatao, added Escobar.

“This project comes to strengthen us in the Sumpul sub-basin, to which I belong, and to improve forest recovery. We must raise awareness about the proper use of water, we have to protect and care for it because water conservation is important for the balance and development of flora and fauna,” said coffee farmer Jesús Serrano Menjívar, owner of the protected natural area Finca Santa Marta. in the area of La Montañona, Chalatenango.

The producer highlighted that the lands he now protects with coffee were used to grow vegetables, but that later, 50% of the property was dedicated to coffee cultivation. “Of 32 blocks of land, we have 50% of forest and the other 50% dedicated to coffee production,” he added.

For his part, Minwoon Lim, Central American manager of the Forest Restoration and Climate Adaptation Project of the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute, emphasized that his country will support El Salvador in the recovery of the forest forest.

“Our goals are to reforest the degraded areas of this country, increase adaptation to climate change, strengthen the knowledge of producers, improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of the Chalatenango areas and thus contribute to the preservation of the natural resources that the Salvadoran people possess.”

The MAG appreciates the joint efforts carried out with the Korea Forest Promotion Institute and the General Directorate of Forest Management, Watersheds and Irrigation; in addition, the support of the Korean Forest Service and the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

“Beyond simply planting trees and restoring forests, the project will protect biodiversity, improve the quality of life of local communities and highlight the importance of sustainable environmental management and nature conservation,” concluded the first secretary and consul of the embassy of the Republic of Korea in El Salvador, Lee Woo Chul.
