While Alexandre de Moraes praises the Federal Supreme Court, crediting it with containing a coup d’état of January 8, 2023, the much more realistic Defense Minister José Múcio recognizes that there was no coup d’état because the I didn’t want the army.

He told the Globe:

“It may be that some people in the institution wanted it, but the Armed Forces did not want a coup. You can say: ‘In the previous government there were people who wanted the coup’, but there was no leader who said: ‘We want it, I’m the leader, let’s go’. There is no revolution without a leader.”

Both political-ideological camps, according to Múcio, repudiated the Army in those days:

“The left was horrified by the military, because they thought they wanted a coup, and the right was even more horrified, because they didn’t carry out the coup.”

Even the Minister of Defense acknowledged that it existed “mistake” against the main authorities on the encampment set up in front of the Army headquarters in Brasilia and accused the STF of not having ordered the demonstrators to leave before January 8.

“I think we made a mistake. Neither the buses nor the people on board were supposed to get on, but people got on.”

“Why didn’t the court order him to be taken away? Why did it have to be an act imposed by the Defense? The court didn’t take it away, only after the 8th. Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered it to be removed, he could have ordered it on the 7th, 6th, 5th… He couldn’t come to us. We could have caused a disaster. I would do it all over again like I did. Because it was done this way, we live in this peaceful environment in the Armed Forces today.”

Regarding the crisis between the Palácio do Planalto and the military, José Múcio stated that the situation is resolved and that the relationship between Lula and the Armed Forces is “Very good”.

Múcio also said that his task is to pacify relations between the government and the military, but did not answer whether this has been achieved.

“Look, I read it in the press… Some say I’m going out, others say I’m going in. The president and I don’t talk about it.”

“I am 75 years old and have many grandchildren who ask for their grandfather’s presence. I discovered this fascination in my old age. Obviously I have enormous gratitude for the president and his encouragement to fix the country really motivates me. When I feel tired, I use this fuel.”
