There is no crime in the alleged ‘sabotage’ of Lewis Hamilton

The Northamptonshire Police (United Kingdom) informed the British Formula 1 team Mercedes that it has not been committed no crime by sending an anonymous email claiming that Lewis Hamilton’s car was being “sabotaged” by the team.

Speaking at the Spanish Grand Prix, team boss Toto Wolff pledged to go “with all force” to investigate the origin of the message, supposedly signed by a disgruntled member of Mercedes staff and titled ‘A potential death sentence for Lewis’.

The email, addressed to Wolff; the president of F1, Stefano Domenicali; to FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem, among others, arrived on June 10, one day after the Canadian Grand Prix, a race in which Hamilton was overtaken by his teammate George Russell in the penultimate lap. Mercedes reported the note to authorities 48 hours later.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said a complaint had been received on June 12 about an email that had been circulated within the Mercedes AMG F1 team. “No criminal offences were found to have been committed. However, advice was given regarding any other emails the team may receive,” he noted.

The email accused Wolff of being “vindictive” and claimed that the Austrian, 52, “is doing everything possible to get back at him (Hamilton)” for deciding to leave. Mercedes and sign for Ferrari at the end of the season.

Last Friday, Wolff, who insists the email did not come from his own team, asked “conspiracy theorists” to “see a psychiatrist” if they thought the team was working against Hamilton.

After Sunday’s race in Montmeló, in which Hamilton ended his losing streak against Russell, surpassing his compatriot in the standings and achieving his first podium of the season, Wolff reiterated his position. “I have zero respect for these conspiracy theorists, because they have no brains. “We want a car that wins races and championships, and whoever doesn’t understand that should be watching another sport,” he indicated.

“It’s good to see that Lewis has had a great weekend, because strategy has been working against him for a long time. But today has gone in his favor, so I am happy that we have that podium for him because it has been a long time,” he concluded then.
