The organizing committee came up with a bunch of new changes in the new tournament. The 2024 Copa America to be held in the United States is no exception. This time too, the Conmable authorities have changed several rules.
South American football’s governing body has slightly changed Article 96 of their rule book for this year’s Copa America. In light of this change, a team can change 6 players if they want. But in that case the parties have to follow some rules.
If a team feels they need to substitute a 6th player, they will inform the 4th referee. Then the referee will use the pink card. Basically it can only be used if a player sustains a major head injury or severe pain on the field.
When a team makes their sixth change, the opposing team can automatically make their sixth change. After the player has been substituted, he must submit his report to the Conmable Medical Committee within 24 hours of the end of the match. In the meantime, if any hint of hiding is found, the opposing team will be defeated.
In Copa America, there is no rule of extra 30 minutes of play in the knockout rounds. If there is a draw after 90 minutes of play in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, the referee will decide on a straight penalty shootout.
Only in the final match an extra 30 minutes will be played after the 90 minutes have elapsed, if there is no result. Earlier in the 2021 Copa, Messi’s Argentina had to fall under this rule against Colombia in the semi-finals. They later won the tiebreaker.
There have also been some changes in the yellow card rules. If a player receives a yellow card in any two matches up to the quarter finals, he cannot play the next match. However, after the quarter finals, all cards will be removed from the player’s name side.
