If his name seems unfamiliar to you, just wait a moment. Stephen Fry, a British actor, comedian, writer and presenter, was born on 24 August 1957 in Hampstead, London. The Cambridge English Literature graduate in his early days wrote and starred in the comedy series A Bit of Fry and Laurie alongside our very familiar ‘Dr. House” by Hugh Laurie. Fry has always been open about his struggle with bipolar disorder, since the 1980s about his homosexuality, apart from books he loves modern technology. And we know him, for example, from the films The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), The Hobbit (2013 and 2014) or most recently from the Netflix series Sandman (2022). Or as a guide to HBO’s Fantastic Beasts: A Natural History (2022).

Anyway, the audiobook edition of Harry Potter narrated by Stephen Fry is widely considered to be one of the best audio adaptations of the series. With his charming voice and engaging style, Fry brings to life the favorite characters and the magical world of Harry Potter in such a way that he captivates even the Czech listeners. If you or your children are studying the language, ideally start this version while flipping through the book. There is perhaps no more enjoyable way to learn pronunciation and be enchanted by pure British English.
Fry’s breathtaking portrayal of the individual characters is truly impressive. It captures the personality traits of individual characters, from Harry’s first insecure and then determined and courageous behavior to Ron’s humor and Hermione’s intelligence. Fry also wins with many secondary characters, for example with a unique accent, adding depth and richness to the story. He keeps the pace right, mixing tension and humor into each chapter in his own way. As foreign reviewers have already praised, “it allows the listener to easily get lost in the magical world of Hogwarts and its inhabitants.”
