JAKARTAVice President (Wapres) KH Ma’ruf Amin encourage the House of Representatives (DPR) not to rush to decide on a revision of the Broadcasting Law (UU) which is still controversial. The Vice President encouraged the involvement of all stakeholders in deciding on this Broadcasting Bill.

This is because a number of parties consider the revision of the Broadcasting Law to be part of a larger scenario to undermine press freedom, weaken civil society and democracy in Indonesia.

“It’s the DPR’s initiative, which means the government is waiting, therefore the government asks that there be discussions between all stakeholders, so that all stakeholders are involved in providing input, so that there is no rush in deciding this,” said the Vice President after sending off the Aceh Hajj pilgrims. at Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport, Aceh Besar, Aceh Province, Wednesday (29/5/2024).

The Vice President also emphasized that press freedom would not be hampered by the revision of the Broadcasting Law, especially regarding the Second Amendment to Law Number 32 of 2002 concerning Broadcasting.

“What is important is that the issue of press freedom in accordance with existing laws is not hampered,” said the Vice President.

Furthermore, the Vice President also emphasized that the products of investigative journalists are a public right in accordance with agreed regulations.

“Then regarding investigations, I think it is the public’s right, also the right to be given the opportunity, of course with the rules that need to be agreed,” he explained.

The Vice President emphasized that the government is pushing for improvements in the Broadcasting Bill to prevent press freedom from being misused. So, there needs to be rules that are agreed upon by all parties.

“So what this means is that we, the government, are of course pushing for improvements that are still necessary, not to the point of freeing up press freedom, but of course there must also be regulations that must be agreed upon, including the investigation,” he concluded.
