The US State Department denounces Algeria for “serious violations”

The US State Department has singled out Algeria for “serious violations” of religious freedoms, placing it on the list of countries to watch for committing or tolerating this type of transgression.

In a statement released in Washington, Secretary of State Antony Blinken kept Algeria “on the special watch list for committing or tolerating serious violations of religious freedom.”

“The promotion of freedom of religion or belief has been one of the primary objectives of United States foreign policy since Congress approved and signed into law the International Religious Freedom Act in 1998,” recalled the head of American diplomacy.

While recalling that “the challenges to religious freedom in the world are structural, systemic and deeply rooted”, Blinken underlined that with “a thoughtful and constant commitment on the part of those who do not want to accept hatred, intolerance and persecution as the status quo, one day we will see a world where everyone lives in dignity and equality.
