The US plans to manufacture 80 nuclear warheads this year

“The stockpile management and administration plan for fiscal year 2023 includes details to meet program requirements, including the production of 80 plutonium warheads per year,” the statement said.

The organization details that the plan consists of prolonging the useful life of the B61-12 aviation nuclear bombs and modernizing the W88 nuclear warheads for the Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles, used in the Ohio-class strategic submarines. In addition, serial production of W80-4 nuclear warheads for cruise missiles and W87-1 for Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missiles is planned, which will replace the Minuteman III, the only US silo-based missile of such type.

During the 2020 election campaign, current US President Joe Biden promised to work towards a policy in which the US nuclear arsenal would be used only as a response measure. But in March of last year, Biden backtracked on his promise and adopted a new approach that calls for the use of weapons of mass destruction even to deter conventional, non-nuclear threats. With RT
