The UN calls for the protection of the fleeing Rohingyas – 2024-05-27 15:10:33

Another 45,000 Rohingyas have fled the violence-torn Rakhine state of Myanmar and taken refuge near the Naf River on the border with Bangladesh. Volkar Turk, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Organization, called on Bangladesh and other countries to provide effective protection to these Rohingyas. On Friday (May 24) at a press conference in Geneva, Elizabeth Throssel, the spokesperson of the organization, said these things. Qatar-based media Al-Jazeera reported this news.

Elizabeth Throssell told reporters, Volker Turk called for international solidarity with Bangladesh in providing shelter to Myanmar’s Rohingya refugees in accordance with international law.

He also said that thousands of Rohingyas have fled in the past few days due to the conflict in Buthidong and Mangdu towns in Rakhine. Many have been killed. Many houses and belongings have been burnt.

The conflict in Rakhine has been going on since last November. AA says it is fighting for more autonomy for the Rohingya in Rakhine

At least 10,000 citizens have been displaced recently in these two cities due to the fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and the army. Elizabeth mentioned that at least 600,000 minority Rohingya Muslims live in these areas.

Elizabeth Throssell said that there are more than 1 million Rohingyas in Bangladesh. In 2017, they fled their homes and took refuge in Cox’s Bazar during the crackdown by the Myanmar Army.

Al Jazeera’s reporter from Cox’s Bazar, Tanveer Chowdhury, said that the country which is struggling with the burden of 1 million Rohingyas, is not willing to shelter more Rohingyas in any way.
