The UN Assembly voted in favor of Palestine’s entry as a full member

The UN Emergency General Assembly approved incorporating the State of Palestine as a full member by 143 votes in favor, 9 against and 25 abstentions.

Voting in favor, among other countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Spain, France, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Oman, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Syria, Uruguay, Yemen and Venezuela.

The nine votes against: Argentina, Czech Republic, United States, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua.

The 25 abstentions at the time of voting: Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Fiji, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Italy, Lithuania, Malawi, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Kingdom of the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Moldova , Paraguay, Romania, Vanuatu, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Sweden, Switzerland.

The draft resolution urged the Security Council to reconsider the veto issued by the United States, the legal obstacle that prevents Palestine from occupying a seat in the UN with the right to speak and vote.

In the current context of the situation in the Middle East, this diplomatic space would be in the hands of the Hamas terrorist group that controls Gaza and the Palestinian National Authority, which still administers the West Bank.

Before the vote, the representative of Palestine at the UN, Riyad Mansour, requested approval of the project with a speech that aimed to question Israel’s legitimacy of attacking the Gaza Strip, after the terrorist attack committed by Hamas on October 7 of 2023.

“We want freedom and justice for peace,” said Ambassador Mansour without referring to the constant attacks by Hamas. And he added: “Israel committed a massacre in Palestine, they do not want us to exist.”

Next, the Israeli ambassador, Gilad Erdan, took the floor, condemning – in advance – the vote in favor of Palestine. “Today they are going to promote a Palestinian terrorist state. This week the Holocaust was remembered, and just this week, you have decided to honor modern terrorists. How can they be so blind,” said Ambassador Erdan.

And he concluded: “They are going to grant privileges and rights to the future terrorist state of Hamas, to the Hitlers of our times. I said (Yahya) Sinwar, (terrorist leader operating from Gaza). “He will be president of Palestine.”

The draft Resolution that was discussed in the Emergency General Assembly was co-sponsored by more than 40 countries, including Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Honduras, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Peru, Venezuela, China, Spain, Lebanon, Jordan , Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, South Africa and Kuwait.

On April 18, the Security Council discussed a request from Algeria proposing to incorporate Palestine as a full member of the UN. This initiative had 12 votes in favor, one against (United States) and two abstentions (United Kingdom and Switzerland).

The refusal of the United States blocked Palestine’s access, and determined that the draft Algerian Resolution reached the Emergency General Assembly. The United States vetoes because it considers that the recognition of Palestine as a full state should be the consequence of a peace agreement with Israel.Infobae.
