The UJC has lost almost 200,000 members in 17 years

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Union of Young Communists (UJC) has lost almost 200,000 members since 2007, a figure that shows the little intention that Cubans have to belong to this regime organization.

According to an independent media analysis elTOQUEin 2007, the official newspaper Rebel Youth announced that they had reached “the highest number of militants in the history of the Young Communist League (UJC),” when they added 609,000 members.

However, since then, the number of militants has been decreasing, reaching a figure of 415,000 members, a figure provided at the XII Congress of the UJC, which concluded on April 4, 2024.

A graph of membership behavior, made by elTOQUE Based on data collected from official media, it indicates that stagnation occurred in 2020. After having dropped to 300,000 in 2017, the number of members rose to 400,000 in 2020, but since then the number has grown very little.

Emigration, apathy, repression and other factors could influence the low number of young people in the communist organization.

Despite the numbers that show little interest, the newly elected first secretary of the UJC affirmed that there was “a sure continuity, a determination that scares the adversary and strengthens the newest generation.”

In his speech, President Miguel Díaz-Canel asserted that the migration crisis has “a young face,” but said that “today is time to talk about those who are here and now, those who support the country, the Revolution and our dream.” of the future”, with a triumphalist air that seeks to avoid the fact that there is an evident decrease in the number of young people belonging to the UJC.

In this sense, some participants in the congress proposed “strengthening” ideological political work to guarantee “the youth pool of the essential replacement in the party ranks.”

The interventions of some members, attending the congress, noted some “challenges” that currently worry the youth universe, among them, the consumption of toxic substances, teenage pregnancy, and “confrontation with antisocial behavior.”

A few years ago, the then secretary of the UJC, Aylín Álvarez García, said that “the UJC necessarily has to renew itself, adapt itself more and more to the new times every day, and adapt to today’s challenges.”

For many, the organization is nothing more than a control mechanism that pursues the indoctrination and alignment of Cuban youth with the regime’s guidelines.
