Updated Yaris GR:

Let’s open the discussion among car enthusiasts: the GR Yaris is equipped with an automatic transmission: is it an upgrade or a sort of downgrade?

The engine was named on the eve of last year’s Toyota GR Yaris as the open class winner in the Best Car Buy of the Year category. If you really like driving, you will be hard pressed to find a more fun option than this.

Now comes an important update. I almost thought Toyota had read the little negative comment Motor had written about the GR Yaris and asked the interior designers to give the car the instrument cluster it deserves.

Have you read these cases?

Lowered seating position

What was once a boring mix of regular Yaris and Yaris Cross has now become a rougher, driver-oriented cabin. Even the tools have become digital.

Furthermore, the upper edge of the dashboard has been lowered by 50 millimeters to offer better visibility, while the driver’s seat has been lowered by 25 millimeters to optimize the seating position.

CHANGES: It’s not particularly modern or pretty, but the updated instrument panel now differs from that of a standard Yaris.

EIGHT STEPS: A newly developed automatic transmission can be delivered to the GR Yaris. But manual transmission is still standard.

More driving pleasure?

When it was launched in 2020, the GR Yaris had the most powerful three-cylinder engine in the world. Now the power has been increased by 19 HP – to 280 HP, and the torque has been increased by 30 Nm – to 390 Nm.

These forces can now be linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Not surprisingly, Toyota tests show that the new closely spaced automatic transmission provides better measurement results than the existing six-step manual transmission, but the big question is this:

Does it provide more driving pleasure?

In any case, manual transmission will still be standard. The same obviously applies to all-wheel drive.

SMALL CHANGES: Connoisseurs will notice the opening at the bottom of the receiver, which should contribute to both cooling and improved aerodynamics.

Dissipates heat

Externally, changes are visible in the lower part of the front grille, with, among other things, larger side grilles, where the fog lights exposed to the rubble have now been removed.

At the rear, an opening has been inserted into the lower edge of the lower part of the receiver, which is supposed to reduce air resistance and direct heat away from the exhaust system. The lantern design also received minor changes.
