The number of deaths following the FCE line express train accident, which occurred between Sahasinaka and Fenomby on Wednesday, now stands at four, with the death of another young woman aged 20. Seriously injured during the tragedy, she was evacuated to hospital, but despite the care provided, she succumbed to her injuries yesterday.
Initially, the accident caused three deaths according to information from the FCE company, which operates the line. Train T 0432 deviated at PK 114 around 10:40 a.m., causing the death of three people, including an FCE staff member. Other passengers were also injured, including this young woman.
The first reports also indicate significant material damage, with the locomotive completely destroyed. The express train, coming from Manakara and heading to Fianarantsoa, derailed without a clear explanation of the causes of the accident. An investigation is underway, with the presence of the Minister of Transport, Ramonjavelo Valéry, in Fianarantsoa to pay tribute to the victims and the injured.
It should be noted that the express train of the FCE line, dedicated to the transport of passengers, had already derailed at Tanakidy Voromailala the previous Wednesday, September 20. At the time, the train company reported three injuries, leading to the suspension of express train travel for several weeks for maintenance work at Fianarantsoa.
