A lot of people have gotten a good handle on this over the last few days. Skating fever spread like wildfire in the Netherlands. In Drenthe too, many enthusiasts got into trouble. Even now that the thaw has begun.
For example, Grolloo is still full of children skating. Actually the students were supposed to be at school, but the ice rink of the Het Evenveen ice skating club turned out to be more popular. “No, skating is not part of the school subjects,” explains primary school principal Dorien de Vries. “But how wonderful is it that children have this opportunity, so close to school?”
The Ice Skating Association approves of everything. Geert Jan Dekker, member of the Skating Club, looks back on a few days of fun on skates. “The frost was so strong that everything could go on. Yesterday there were three hundred people all day. The whole village is empty and we are having a lot of fun together.”
Even now, as the temperature continues to rise above freezing, the skating on the Grolloër rink is still to blame. “It’s a little wet now, but it’s the last moment that’s possible. This afternoon we’ll see how much more we can go wild.”
Will there be a second period of frost, which will automatically increase skating fever? Dekker has doubts: “It will freeze a little, but during the day there will be a thaw. Then the frozen surface will disappear.” In his capacity as ice master, Dekker is already thinking: “It won’t be like this…”
