The tax on isotonic drinks and nectars: A measure in favor of Public Health that bothers the UDI

In recent days, an intense debate has been generated around the decision of the Internal Revenue Service (SII) to apply a tax on isotonic drinks and nectars. This measure, which seeks to tax these drinks with a tax rate that will range between 10% and 18% on sales and imports, has been received with praise from public health and nutrition experts.

Nicole Aguilera, Msc. and University Teaching Nutritionist, who also serves as Nutritional Advisor to the Organization of Consumers and Users of Chile (ODECU), she firmly supports this initiative and considers it a crucial step towards improving the health of the population.

Aguilera highlights the fact that isotonic drinks and nectars usually contain high levels of sugars and other unhealthy components, which contributes significantly to the obesity epidemic that Chile faces. In this context, increasing the tax on these drinks will not only help discourage their consumption, but will also provide additional resources to the State to address public health challenges related to obesity and chronic diseases.

However, the reaction of certain political sectors, particularly the UDI, has generated concern. The UDI has announced its intention to stop this measure, even resorting to the Comptroller’s Office, which has been interpreted by many as an attempt to protect the interests of manufacturers and hinder the actions proposed by the government in matters of public health.

It is important to note that the increase in the tax on isotonic drinks and nectars is not only intended to raise funds, but also to promote healthier consumption habits and reduce the alarming rates of obesity and related diseases in the Chilean population.

In conclusion, the decision to raise the tax on isotonic drinks and nectars is a necessary and well-founded measure in favor of public health. It is essential that all actors involved, including political sectors, recognize the importance of this initiative and work together to promote a healthier lifestyle for all Chilean citizens.
