Queen B School District 16 Superintendent Joseph Williams confirmed that another student assaulted a student Thursday at Glenside Middle School, 1560 Bloomingdale Road, while others stood by and videotaped the incident.
In a video of the alleged attack posted on social media, a boy can be seen grabbing a girl by the head and knocking her to the ground.
According to Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization CAIR Chicago, the girl is from Saudi Arabia and has been in the US for two months.
After the incident, the school contacted the Glendale Heights Police Department. Williams said the department has begun its own investigation.
Williams also said there was no evidence the attack was motivated by racial, cultural or religious intolerance. However, CAIR Chicago says the boy was involved in another alleged bullying incident last year with another student wearing a hijab.
“We are taking steps to ensure that the students responsible for this incident are held fully accountable in accordance with all applicable laws,” Williams said in a statement.
CAIR Chicago said it hopes the school district will make efforts to address the culture of bullying at the institution.
An investigation into the attack on a Muslim student at Glendale Heights Middle School is ongoing.
