More than a decade after the earthquake, a corporation composed mainly of local residents wants to remodel the space to build the Pueblito de Champa Cultural Center. This Friday there will be a slot for the benefit of the project.
The transformation of the space arises from hard work that began Luis Schmidt Urzua, an entrepreneur and cultural manager who decided in 2015 to leave Santiago to have a better quality of life away from the city with his family in Champa.
“In rural areas there is a lack of cultural spaces, there is a lack of equipment, infrastructure, cultural activities accessible to low-income families, to families that do not They have the resources to pay for gasoline and take a 50-kilometer trip. to take the child to the music workshop,” he says. Coralie Dubostpresident of the Champa Village Cultural Corporation.
In April 2019, the remodeling of the Plaza de Armas in Champa was inaugurated. The new infrastructure gave an impetus for neighbors to generate instances to share and generate community. Schmidt worked in a company that built stands for fairs, congresses, events and exhibitions, with all the clothing of Ferias Chile began to hold cultural events in the Clock Square in Champa.
After the fairs were held, Schmidt wanted to create a cultural center to give the community a permanent space so that they could develop and share the artistic work done by the inhabitants of Champa. In this way, in 2019 the Champa Village Cultural Corporationwith the aim of promoting the remodelling and creation of this new space for the town.
Since then, the group has been able to carry out its activities, which include concerts, plays, photography exhibitions, art, craft and medieval fairs, a poetry festival and online activities. However, On May 4 of this year, Luis Schmidt Urzúa died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 44.
“With Margarita Sánchez, who is one of the descendants of the Sanchez family who built the school, formed the Pueblito de Champa Corporation to be able to apply for funds, to be able to do a lot of Things needed to be a corporation and they continued doing what they had been doing but asking for contributions to start collecting money for the school. with this dream that he had. And as a corporation they applied for the loan of this school and They won the loan of this school for 35 years,” he says. Alejandra Schmidt, Luis’s sister.
Luis’ commitment to the cultural and artistic development of Champa made him a very well-known and beloved person in the community, so his death was extremely significant for the local residents. However, his project was not abandoned. The businessman’s family, along with the members of the Corporation, committed themselves to the project and decided to raise a total of $43 million pesos to build the school’s roof.
In order to raise funds, they held a raffle to install the roof and continue remodeling the space in the future.
“In the field, contradictorily, There are not so many sports panoramas,There are sports games, but basically they play football. There is not much infrastructure for cycling, There are not so many cycle paths, There aren’t that many parks to go jogging in either. There are not many natural panoramas either because in Paine everything is unfortunately privatized. Aculeo Lagoon is a private lagoon y cultural panoramas, cinemas There is not. EThere is the Paine Centro theater but that’s the only thing. “That is why Champa needs a cultural centre, it is sorely needed,” explains Coralie Dubost.
“The long-term challenge is to create an organization that can really manage a wide range of services, based on stable and sufficient funding to offer people something of good quality,” he added.
