Minister Dias Toffoli, of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), has ordered the opening of an investigation against the senator and former judge Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR), following a request from the PGR (General Prosecutor’s Office), for suspected of fraud in a plea deal before Operation Lava Jato.
The case concerns Curitiba businessman and former state deputy Antônio Celso Garcia, known as Tony Garcia, who claims he was forced to illegally register people at the request of prosecutors and Moro after signing a plea deal in 2004 .
The opening of the investigation was revealed by GloboNews and confirmed by Folha de S.Paulo.
The alleged illegalities, according to Garcia, would have been reported to federal judge Gabriela Hardt in 2021. In November 2022, the judge annulled the old plea agreement, in response to a request from the MPF (Federal Prosecutor’s Office) in 2018. The entrepreneur’s defense still appeal the decision.
The Federal Police, who also underlined the need to investigate the case, asked Toffoli to also investigate Moro’s wife, the federal deputy Rosangela Moro, and the public prosecutors and former public prosecutors who worked on Lava Jato, as Deltan Dallagnol.
Contacted, Moro has not yet responded.
