The Security Council adopts a resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Gaza – Yesterday, Monday, the UN Security Council adopted its first resolution for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The United States did not use its veto against the resolution and abstained from voting, after obstructing previous attempts to issue a resolution by resorting to the veto, making it the first ceasefire resolution adopted by the Council after four previous failures.

The resolution, which was supported by 14 members and one abstention, “demands an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan,” which began two weeks ago, provided that it “leads to a permanent ceasefire,” and “demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

The draft resolution adopted is the result of the work of non-permanent members of the Council who negotiated with the United States throughout the weekend in an attempt to avoid another fiasco, according to diplomatic sources who expressed some optimism about the outcome of the vote.

The draft resolution also calls for “removing all obstacles” to humanitarian aid, without which the 2.4 million residents of the Gaza Strip are at risk of famine.

Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, had previously announced Moscow’s support for the non-permanent members’ document, which is also supported by a group of Arab countries in the United Nations.

China also announced its support for the draft resolution, as Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, “China supports this draft resolution and congratulates Algeria and other countries for their tireless work in this field.”

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened the United States not to send a delegation to Washington to discuss the military operation in Gaza, if Washington did not use its veto power in the Security Council.
