Russia has amassed up to 25,000 troops around the strategic city of Chasiv Yar, the Ukrainian army informed on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Kremlin claims to have captured another village in the Donetsk region. “The enemy has gathered 20,000-25,000 troops” around Chasiv Yar, Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the operational and strategic group of troops in Khryttsk, told Ukrainian television.
Chasiv Yar is a key town that lies west of the Russian-occupied city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, the American think-tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) characterized it as a “fortified city”. If the Russians took it, it would also help them take other important defensive settlements, ISW claims.
Furthermore, it would help the Russians to cut off the city of Kostiantynivka, which would threaten the “neck of the Ukrainian defense” in the Donetsk region, further stated by ISW.
More villages and towns in danger
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said last month that Moscow is trying to “break through our defenses west of Bakhmut”, take control of Chasiv Yar and “create conditions for a further advance” towards the Donetsk city of Kramatorsk, which lies northwest of Časiv Jaru.
Syrskyj added that the Kremlin plans to occupy Chasiv Yar by May 9. “4. Ukrainian and Russian forces continued to fight near Chasiv Yar on May 1, but there were no confirmed changes in the front line,” ISW assessed on Saturday.
Russia concentrated its forces on the eastern front line, occupying Bakhmut and Avdijivka. It was occupied in February 2022. The Ukrainian military announced on Sunday that it had repelled multiple attacks near Bakhmut within 24 hours, including attacks around the village of Karlivka and the town of Ivanivske. The fact that the Russians attacked Ukrainian positions near Bakhmut was also confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense. Moscow added in a statement that it had “completely liberated” the village of Ocheretyne.
Russian forces made a “significant tactical advance” near the village of Archanhelske, which is located northwest of Avdijivka, between Friday and Saturday, ISW said in the latest statement. Russian media reported that Ukrainian forces retreated from the village at the beginning of the month.
