Usually a giant screen is set up in the Trocadero square in Paris for people to watch a crucial football final or other high-level sporting event. Yesterday afternoon he stood up to watch an event of a completely different nature: the vote, at the Palace of Versailles, in a joint session of deputies and senators, on a constitutional revision proposal for the explicit and unequivocal registration of the right to abortion in the French Constitution. The National Assembly and the Senate had already approved, in separate votes, with a very large majority (493 votes in favor against 30 against the first, 267 votes in favor against 50 against the second) the relevant bill. Its approval, at Versailles, by three-fifths of the voters, a necessary condition for the amendment of the Constitution, was therefore considered a foregone conclusion.
