On Sunday night, the Tripoli Security Directorate announced that the Public Prosecution had begun its investigations into the killing of 10 people in the Abu Salim neighborhood in the Libyan capital, some of whom belonged to the “Stabilization Support Service” affiliated with the Presidential Council.
The directorate’s official page quoted a press briefing stating that the Abu Salim neighborhood police station received a report regarding a televised statement from the directorate that “there had been a killing incident of ten people, some of whom were affiliated with the Stabilization Support Service,” in the Abu Salim neighborhood, “at the hands of an unidentified armed group,” noting that The Public Prosecution was informed of the incident, which it began investigating.
On Sunday, Libyan media reported news that a number of members of the Stabilization Support Service, affiliated with the Presidential Council, were found dead in one of the agency’s headquarters, with gunshot wounds on their bodies, indicating that a “liquidation crime” had occurred.
While the Ministry of Interior and the Support and Stability Agency remained silent about the incident, the UN mission to Libya called on the authorities to conduct an “independent, rapid and comprehensive investigation” into the killing incident, which claimed the lives of at least ten people.
In a statement late on Sunday night, the mission urged the authorities to “work to prevent any actions that may lead to escalation and further violence,” and referred to the warnings of the UN envoy Abdullah Batili that “competition between the security agencies entails Serious risks to the fragile security situation in the capital, Tripoli.”
The previous Government of National Accord formed the Support and Stability Apparatus, at the beginning of the year 2021, from armed groups affiliated with the Abu Salim Martyrs Brigade, which was one of the most prominent armed forces in Tripoli in the face of the aggression of Khalifa Haftar’s militias during the aggression against Tripoli, in the years 2019 and 2020, and its affiliation was transferred from the Ministry of National Accord.
