The PTAC recognized 33 water consumption meters as not complying with metrological requirements

In two years, the Center for Protection of Consumer Rights (PTAC) recognized 33 water consumption meters as not complying with metrological requirements, Nilss Sproģis, head of the Metrological Monitoring and Hazardous Equipment Department of the Department of monitoring of PTAC products and services.

He explains that in 2021 the PTAC started monitoring the use of water consumption meters at the entrances of residential buildings in Latvian cities in order to find an objective picture of the general state of meters in the water sector.

In total, PTAC carried out inspections in 23 cities in the period from 2021 to July 2023, checking 201 meters located at the entrances of residential houses. Of these, 58 meters were removed for out-of-service verification.

Sprogis indicates that 20 meters were declared unfit for use following an out-of-service test, while 11 meters did not comply with the periodicity of the re-test.

The PTAC notes that in 89% of cases, mechanical filters were installed before meters in the entrances of residential homes, so service providers are trying to improve water quality and ensure more accurate accounting of water consumption. The results of the out-of-service verification also confirm that the use of the mechanical filter guarantees more accurate accounting, as the measurement error does not exceed 15% even for non-compliant meters.

Furthermore, after removing the meters from the entrance to the house, the meters were not found to be significantly contaminated with various impurities, as the PTAC found in cases where mechanical filters were not installed.

At the same time, PTAC draws attention to the fact that it has repeatedly received complaints from residents about inadequate replacement of meters in apartments, replacing only the counting mechanism or dial at the time of installation.

PTAC invites citizens to pay attention to the replacement of meters and the quality of service.
